Book Review: Witches Steeped in Gold

Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart

Releases: April 20, 2021

"Divided by their order. United by their vengeance."

A stunning debut that draws you in page after page.

Iraya has been plotting her revenge since she landed in prison. She'll do whatever it takes avenge her parents and her order, even if that means teaming up with the Queen's daughter.

Jazmyne may be the Queen's daughter, but she knows her people are suffering under her mother's rule. She knows that removing her mother from the throne and replacing her is the only answer.

These two rival witches must come together to take down their common enemy. Changes are coming to the island, and enemies and allies alike want to lead it. But, lines are easily blurred and power is intoxicating. How far will Iraya and Jazmyne go to meet their bloody endgame?

With a horrid sacrificial game akin to The Hunger Games, witches who get their power from their ancestors and gold--and lots of it, and revenge plots involving monsters and pirates, this is a wild ride you don't want to miss out on!

Smart creates a world so vivid and real, you think you're the one slinking through the jungle wielding magic through gold. It's such a fresh take on magic, and readers of fantasy will appreciate such a new and fantastic concept. I absolutely loved this rich, magical world!

The characters are rich and deeply woven into the story, I couldn't decide who I was rooting for or against by the end of it!

Honestly, it's such a breath of fresh air in the world of YA fantasy.

The chapters alternated POVs between Ira and Jaz, and I really enjoyed hearing "both" sides of the story. No matter who you started rooting for and where you ended up in the end, both girls thought that what they were doing was for the best. I love how lines can get blurred when people assume they're doing the right thing. It's such a balancing act, and I love how Smart walks it.

The other characters are just as interesting to read, though I think my favorite was Kirdan. And don't get me started on the pirates! We love anything with pirates in it, especially big strong ones that pledge their allegiance to a witch in need. I hope that in the forthcoming books, we learn more about him and where he's from. There are so many possibilities with these characters in this world, I just want to absorb it all!

The twists and turns kept me guessing to the end and I was constantly eager to find out what happens next. Putting the book down was a lot harder than I anticipated! I loved the concept of two rival witches having to come together, but even that doesn't give you half of what transpires in these pages!

This Jamaican-inspired fantasy will have you itching to turn the page. I can't wait for book two!
